Another year, another Tiger. This year, the Wii SKU has been added to the mix of PS3 and X360. The games are expected to be on store shelves this August. I've posted a brief here.

Urban Dare rolled around again. This time, back in Orlando. Jamie and I ran this one together again. Other teams that participated were Gary/Russ and Jose/Ryan. Newcomer to the group - Ryan Burkett gave it a shot and finished with a time of around 2:50. Jamie and I were aiming to finish ten minutes faster than last time - and we did with a time of 3:18. But Gary and Russ beat us all with a time just shy of 2:30.
The event felt more involved this time around. "Dares" included shuffleboard, wheelbarrow, push-ups, putting a frozen sock on a foot, eating baklava, playing Connect Four, and solving a jigsaw puzzle.
Unique this year were two picture checkpoints that required more than just a picture. The first was the checkpoint at Church Street Station. On the sidewalks there were bricks with engravings in them, similar to what you might see at the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Teams were given an engraving to find, then qwew required to take a picture of their feet next to the brick. Each team had a different engraving and there must have been well over 1000 bricks to search. Some found their brick quick while others struggled. That was actually a good challenge - it separated a lot of the teams and prevented "mass-following". The second unique picture checkpoint was a picture of the Millenium Arch at Orange and Wall Streets. On the arch were several painted oranges. Teams had to count these oranges and report how many they counted at the Finish. Teams that were inaccurate were penalized on a sliding scale.

The MIT Mystery Hunt took place this past weekend. It's an event that MIT has been holding for 20+ years now. The goal is to be the team that finds a coin hidden somewhere on the campus. The method to find the coin always involves some sort of elaborate puzzle-solving.
This was the first year that Jamie and I participated. We worked from a distance with a team of about 30-40 people on the MIT campus along with a dozen folks helping from Washington and a few folks here in Florida to form a large 50+ person team titled "Silly Hat Brigade".
Lots of fun, but very tedious. Not for the average crossword puzzle lover. The Hunt's organizers update a website each year to share the puzzles and solutions for all. Click here to go to the main page for the entire Mystery Hunt. From there, details on more recent years can be found as well.

I participated in Urban Dare Orlando on November 17 with Jamie and in Tampa on December 1 with friend and co-worker, Jose Caban. Thanks to everyone who helped navigate us for both races - especially our mobile helpers, Arthur Tomlin and Sulabh Patel. These guys drove around the cities with a GPS - I think we had to be the only team to have that type of support. Anyway, below is a listing of links to information on the two races. If you have access to the photo gallery, you can also check out some of the checkpoint images.
BTW - we finished in 3h30m or so in each race, which is better than the finishes from Urban Challenge years ago.
A co-worker forwarded this movie out to the team recently. It's a video that reviews NES products. Really, a trip down memory lane; albeit with colorful language :)
This one is on the Power Glove - sort of the precursor to the Wii..
